ZoΓ« Yadira SaldaΓ±a-PeregoΒ (/sΙΛlΛdΓ¦njΙ/Β sahl-DAN-yΙ,Β Latin American Spanish:Β [Λso.eΒ salΛdaΙ²a];Β nΓ©eΒ SaldaΓ±a Nazario; born June 19, 1978) is an American actress. Known primarily for her work in science fiction film franchises, she has starred in four of the sevenΒ highest-grossing films of all time, including the top three (Avatar,Β Avatar: The Way of Water, andΒ Avengers: Endgame). Films she has appeared in have grossed more thanΒ $15 billion worldwide, and, as of 2024, she is theΒ second highest-grossing lead actress and the highest-grossing actress overall. Β TimeΒ magazine named her one of theΒ 100 most influential people in the worldΒ in 2023.
A trained dancer, SaldaΓ±a began her on-screen acting career in 1999 with a guest role inΒ Law & Order. Her first film role was inΒ Center Stage(2000), where she played a ballet dancer. She received early recognition for her work oppositeΒ Britney SpearsΒ in theΒ road filmΒ CrossroadsΒ (2002). Beginning in 2009, SaldaΓ±a achieved a career breakthrough with her roles asΒ Nyota UhuraΒ in theΒ Star TrekΒ reboot film seriesΒ andΒ NeytiriΒ inΒ James Cameron'sΒ AvatarΒ film series. She portrayedΒ GamoraΒ in five films in theΒ Marvel Cinematic Universe, fromΒ Guardians of the GalaxyΒ (2014) toΒ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3Β (2023).
In addition to franchise work, SaldaΓ±a has starred in the science fiction filmΒ The Adam Project and the romantic drama miniseriesΒ From Scratch, both forΒ NetflixΒ in 2022. In 2023, she began playing the lead role of a CIA officer in theΒ Paramount+Β spy seriesΒ Lioness. In 2024, SaldaΓ±a starred in the musical crime filmΒ Emilia PΓ©rez, for which she received several accolades, including theΒ Academy Award,Β BAFTA AwardΒ andΒ Golden Globe AwardΒ for Best Supporting Actress.
