He made his acting debut at anΒ off-BroadwayΒ theatre in 1995 inΒ The Monogamist, won theΒ Theatre World AwardΒ for his performance, and then originatedΒ David Sedaris'Β The Santaland DiariesΒ in 1996. He then branched out to film; in the early years of his career, he was often cast in supporting villainous roles, most notably inΒ Scream 2Β (1997),Β GoΒ (1999),Β Gone in 60 SecondsΒ andΒ The Broken Hearts ClubΒ (2000),Β A Man ApartΒ (2003), andΒ The Girl Next Door (2004).
He came to a broader audience through his portrayal of SheriffΒ Seth BullockΒ inΒ HBO's westernΒ DeadwoodΒ (2004β2006), later reprising the role inΒ Deadwood: The MovieΒ (2019). He had starring roles in films such asΒ Catch and Release (2006),Β HitmanΒ (2007),Β A Perfect Getaway (2009), andΒ The CraziesΒ (2010), and he played the main antagonist, Thomas Gabriel, inΒ Live Free or Die HardΒ (2007). Olyphant was a recurring guest star in season two of theΒ FXΒ legal thrillerΒ DamagesΒ (2009).
From 2010 to 2015, Olyphant starred as Deputy U.S. MarshalΒ Raylan GivensΒ in FX's modern-dayΒ KentuckyΒ southern gothicΒ Justified, a performance for which he was nominated for aΒ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama SeriesΒ in 2011. Since the end ofΒ Justified, Olyphant has starred in films such asΒ Mother's DayΒ (2016),Β SnowdenΒ (2016),Β Once Upon a Time in HollywoodΒ (2019), andΒ AmsterdamΒ (2022). He has also had notable guest appearances in numerous television sitcoms, includingΒ The OfficeΒ (2010),Β The Mindy Project (2013), andΒ The GrinderΒ (2015β2016), for which he won aΒ Critics' Choice Award. He also starred in theΒ NetflixΒ comedy seriesΒ Santa Clarita DietΒ (2017β2019). In 2020, he played himself in a brief cameo, parodying hisΒ JustifiedΒ character, in theΒ NBCΒ award-winning showΒ The Good Place. In the same year, he guest-starred in season 10 ofΒ Curb Your Enthusiasm, as well as in theΒ fourth seasonΒ ofΒ FargoΒ and theΒ second seasonΒ ofΒ The MandalorianΒ in the episode "Chapter 9: The Marshal" asΒ Cobb Vanth, a role he later reprised inΒ The Book of Boba Fett. In 2025, he starred in a main role in theΒ FXΒ seriesΒ Alien: Earth.
