Timothy Walter BurtonΒ (born August 25, 1958) is an American filmmaker and animator. He is known for pioneeringΒ goth subcultureΒ in Hollywood, with his films employing a distinctive style that blendsΒ gothic horrorΒ andΒ dark fantasy aesthetics with whimsical and surreal elements. He has receivedΒ numerous accolades, including oneΒ Emmy AwardΒ and nominations for twoΒ Academy Awards, aΒ Golden Globe Award, and threeΒ BAFTA Awards. He was honoured with theΒ Venice International Film Festival'sΒ Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in 2007 and France'sΒ Order of Arts and LettersΒ in 2010.
Burton made hisΒ directorial debutΒ with the comedy filmΒ Pee-wee's Big AdventureΒ (1985). He gained wider prominence for directingΒ Beetlejuice (1988) andΒ Edward ScissorhandsΒ (1990), as well as producingΒ The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), which was based on a poem he wrote. Burton has directed several episodes of theΒ NetflixΒ seriesΒ WednesdayΒ (2022βpresent), for which he was nominated for theΒ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. He frequently collaborates with musicianΒ Danny Elfman, who has scored all but three of his films. He has also published several books, includingΒ The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other StoriesΒ (1997).
