Takashi YamazakiΒ (ε±±ε΄ θ²΄,Β Yamazaki Takashi, born June 12, 1964)Β is a Japanese filmmaker andΒ visual effects supervisor. Known for his blockbusters featuring advanced visual effects, he is considered a leading figure in theΒ Japanese film industry. Yamazaki receives multiple accolades, including anΒ Academy Award, eightΒ Japanese Academy Awards, fiveΒ Nikkan SportsΒ Film Awards, twoΒ Hochi Film Awards, and anΒ Asian Film Award. His films have collectively grossed overΒ $523 million worldwide. Yamazaki found employment at the visual effects and animation studioΒ ShirogumiΒ in 1986 and has remained there throughout his career. His first directorial features were the science fiction filmsΒ Juvenile(2000) andΒ ReturnerΒ (2002), for which he became known as the "JapaneseΒ James Cameron".Β He later gained further notice in Japan by directing film adaptations of popular anime, novels, and manga, includingΒ Always: Sunset on Third StreetΒ (2005),Β Space Battleship YamatoΒ (2010),Β The Eternal ZeroΒ (2013), andΒ Stand by Me DoraemonΒ (2014); the latter two films both earned a total of nine awards at theΒ 38th Japan Academy Film Prize. His 2023Β kaijuΒ epic,Β Godzilla Minus One, became the most successful JapaneseΒ GodzillaΒ film of all time and one of his highest-grossing films. Yamazaki and the visual effects team also became the firstΒ JapaneseΒ crew to receive theΒ Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. In 2024, Yamazaki was included inΒ Gold House's annual list ofΒ 100 Most Impactful Asians.
