Ta-Nehisi Paul CoatesΒ (/ˌtɑːnΙ™Λˆhɑːsi/TAH-nΙ™-HAH-see; (born September 30, 1975)Β is an American author, journalist, and activist. He gained a wide readership as a national correspondent atΒ The Atlantic, where he wrote about cultural, social, and political issues, particularly regarding African Americans andΒ white supremacy.

In 2015, Coates received aΒ MacArthur FellowshipΒ from theΒ MacArthur Foundation.

His work has been published in numerous periodicals. He has published four nonfiction books:Β The Beautiful Struggle(2008),Β Between the World and Me(2015),Β We Were Eight Years in Power: An American TragedyΒ (2017), andΒ The MessageΒ (2024).Β Between the World and MeΒ won the 2015Β National Book Award for Nonfiction.Β He has also written aΒ Black PantherΒ and Captain AmericaΒ series forΒ Marvel Comics.Β His first novel,Β The Water Dancer, was published in 2019.
