Susanne BierΒ (Danish:Β [suΛsΓ¦nΙΒ ΛpiΙΜ―Λ]; born 15 April 1960) is a Danish filmmaker. Bier is the first female director to collectively receive anΒ Academy AwardΒ (Foreign Film), aΒ Golden Globe Award, aΒ European Film AwardΒ (forΒ In a Better World) and aΒ Primetime Emmy AwardΒ (for directingΒ The Night Manager).
Bier debuted her feature film withΒ Freud's Leaving HomeΒ (1991). She directed a string of films, includingΒ Open HeartsΒ (2002),Β BrothersΒ (2004),Β After the Wedding(2006), andΒ In a Better WorldΒ (2010), the later of which earned theΒ Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. She directed the English-language filmsΒ Things We Lost in the FireΒ (2007),Β Love Is All You NeedΒ (2012),Β SerenaΒ (2014), andΒ Bird Box(2018).
She directed theΒ BBC OneΒ /Β AMCΒ miniseriesΒ The Night ManagerΒ (2016) on television, earning theΒ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. She also directed theΒ HBOΒ psychological miniseriesΒ The UndoingΒ (2020), theΒ ShowtimeΒ historical anthology seriesΒ The First LadyΒ (2022), and theΒ NetflixΒ mystery series,Β The Perfect CoupleΒ (2024).
