Stephen Edwin KingΒ (born September 21, 1947) is an American author. He is widely known for hisΒ horror novels and has been crowned the "King of Horror".Β He has also explored other genres: suspense,Β crime, science-fiction, fantasy, andΒ mystery. Though known primarily for his novels, he has written approximatelyΒ 200 short stories, most of which have been published in collections.
HisΒ debut,Β CarrieΒ (1974), established him in horror.Β Different SeasonsΒ (1982), a collection of four novellas, was his first major departure from the genre. Among the films adapted from King's fiction areΒ CarrieΒ (1976),Β The ShiningΒ (1980),Β The Dead ZoneΒ andΒ ChristineΒ (both 1983),Β Stand by Me(1986),Β MiseryΒ (1990),Β The Shawshank RedemptionΒ (1994),Β Dolores ClaiborneΒ (1995),Β The Green MileΒ (1999),Β The MistΒ (2007), andΒ ItΒ (2017).
He has also published under the pseudonymΒ Richard BachmanΒ and has co-written works with other authors, notably his friendΒ Peter StraubΒ and sonsΒ Joe Hill andΒ Owen King. He has also written nonfiction, notablyΒ Danse MacabreΒ (1981) andΒ On Writing: A Memoir of the CraftΒ (2000).
AmongΒ other awards, he has won theΒ O. Henry AwardΒ for "The Man in the Black Suit" (1994) and theΒ Los Angeles TimesΒ Book Prize for Mystery/Thriller for 11/22/63 (2011). He has also won honours for his overall contributions to literature, including the 2003Β Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters, the 2007 Grand Master Award from theΒ Mystery Writers of AmericaΒ and the 2014Β National Medal of Arts.Β Joyce Carol OatesΒ called King "a brilliantly rooted, psychologically 'realistic' writer for whom the American scene has been a continuous source of inspiration, and American popular culture a vast cornucopia of possibilities."
