Biography
Shelley LongΒ (born August 23, 1949) is an American retired actress, singer, and comedian. For her role asΒ Diane ChambersΒ on the hit sitcomΒ Cheers,Β she received five Emmy nominations, winning in 1983 forΒ Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.Β She also won twoΒ Golden Globe AwardsΒ for the role.Β She reprised her role as Diane Chambers in three episodes of theΒ spin-offΒ Frasier, for which she received an additional guest star Emmy nomination.
She has starred in several films includingΒ Night ShiftΒ (1982),Β Irreconcilable DifferencesΒ (1984),Β The Money PitΒ (1986),Β Outrageous FortuneΒ (1987),Β Hello AgainΒ (1987),Β Troop Beverly HillsΒ (1989),Β The Brady Bunch MovieΒ (1995),Β A Very Brady SequelΒ (1996), andΒ Dr. T & the WomenΒ (2000). While working onΒ Cheers,Β she continued to appear in motion pictures. In 1984, she was nominated for a Best Leading ActressΒ Golden GlobeΒ for her performance inΒ Irreconcilable Differences. She also starred in the comediesΒ The Money PitΒ andΒ Outrageous Fortune. She was offered lead roles inΒ Working Girl,Β Jumpin' Jack Flash, andΒ My Stepmother Is an AlienΒ but did not accept them. She was also offered the role of Mary, the mother inΒ Steven Spielberg'sΒ E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, but turned it down because she had already signed on to appear inΒ Night Shift.
She left the series Cheers in 1987, but returned for the 200th Anniversary Special in 1990. She then returned as Diane in the last season (1992-1993), for which she picked up anotherΒ EmmyΒ nomination. She later reprise her role as Diane in several episodes of theΒ Kelsey GrammerΒ spinoff seriesΒ Frasier, for which she was nominated for anotherΒ Emmy Award.
She appeared asΒ Carol BradyΒ in the 1995 hit filmΒ The Brady Bunch MovieΒ which is aΒ campyΒ take of the popular television show. In 1996, she reprised the role inΒ A Very Brady SequelΒ which had modest success, and again in the 2002 television film sequelβThe Brady Bunch in the White House.
She had a recurring role on the popular ABC sitcomΒ Modern FamilyΒ as DeDe Pritchett, the ex-wife ofΒ Jay Pritchett.
