Sir Samuel Alexander MendesΒ CBEΒ (born 1 August 1965) is a British film and stage director, producer, and screenwriter. In 2000, Mendes was appointed a CBE for his services to drama, and he wasΒ knightedΒ in theΒ 2020 New Year Honours List. In 2000, Mendes was awarded theΒ Shakespeare PrizeΒ by theΒ Alfred Toepfer FoundationΒ inΒ Hamburg,Β Germany. In 2005, he received a lifetime achievement award from theΒ Directors Guild of Great Britain. In 2008,Β The Daily TelegraphΒ ranked him number 15 in their list of the "100 most powerful people inΒ British culture".
Born inΒ BerkshireΒ to aΒ TrinidadianΒ Catholic father and anΒ English JewishΒ mother, Mendes grew up in North London. He read English atΒ PeterhouseΒ atΒ Cambridge University. He began directing plays there before joiningΒ Donmar Warehouse, a centre of 1990sΒ London theatreΒ culture. In theatre, he is known for his dark re-inventions of the stage musicalsΒ CabaretΒ (1993),Β Oliver!Β (1994),Β CompanyΒ (1995), andΒ GypsyΒ (2003).
For the first time, he directed an originalΒ West EndΒ stage musical withΒ Charlie and the Chocolate FactoryΒ (2013). For his work on the London stage, Mendes has received threeΒ Laurence Olivier AwardsΒ forΒ Company,Β Twelfth Night, and The Ferryman. OnΒ Broadway, he earned twoΒ Tony AwardsΒ forΒ Best Direction of a PlayΒ for Β The FerrymanΒ in 2019 andΒ The Lehman TrilogyΒ in 2022.
In film, he made his directorial debut with the dramaΒ American BeautyΒ (1999), which earned him theΒ Academy AwardΒ andΒ Golden Globe Award for Best Director. He has since directed the filmsΒ Road to PerditionΒ (2002),Β JarheadΒ (2005),Β Revolutionary Road (2008), and theΒ James BondΒ filmsΒ SkyfallΒ (2012) andΒ SpectreΒ (2015). For the war filmΒ 1917Β (2019), he received theΒ BAFTA AwardΒ and Golden Globe Award for Best Director, as well as his second Academy Award nomination for Best Director,Β Best PictureΒ andΒ Best Original Screenplay.
