Matthew Ryan PhillippeΒ (/ΛfΙͺlΙͺpi/; born September 10, 1974) is an American actor. After appearing asΒ Billy DouglasΒ on the soap operaΒ One Life to LiveΒ (1992β1993) and making his feature film debut inΒ Crimson TideΒ (1995), he came to prominence in the late 1990s with starring roles inΒ I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), 54Β (1998), Playing by HeartΒ (1998), andΒ Cruel IntentionsΒ (1999).
Throughout the 2000s and beyond, he took on a range of roles in films such asΒ The Way of the GunΒ (2000),Β AntitrustΒ (2001),Β Gosford ParkΒ (2001),Β Igby Goes Down (2002),Β The I InsideΒ (2003),Β CrashΒ (2004),Β Flags of Our Fathers (2006), Breach (2007), Stop-LossΒ (2008),Β MacGruberΒ (2010),Β The Bang Bang ClubΒ (2010), andΒ The Lincoln LawyerΒ (2011).
Outside of film, Phillippe appeared in the lead role ofΒ Bob Lee SwaggerΒ onΒ USA Network'sΒ ShooterΒ (2016β2018) and reprised his portrayal of Dixon Piper in the PeacockΒ adaptation ofΒ MacGruberΒ (2021).
In 1997, Phillippe met actressΒ Reese WitherspoonΒ at a party for her 21st birthday. Phillippe and Witherspoon, who was six months pregnant, married on June 5, 1999. Their daughter Eva was born in 1999 and their son Deacon was born in 2003. On October 30, 2006, the couple released a statement announcing that they were formally separating. Witherspoon filed for divorce on November 8, 2006, citingΒ irreconcilable differencesΒ as the cause. The couple's marriage officially ended on October 5, 2007, with final divorce arrangements settled on June 13, 2008, according to court documents. They shared joint custody of their children.
He began dating model and actressΒ Alexis KnappΒ in May 2010;Β they ended their relationship in September that same year. After their breakup, Knapp discovered that she was pregnant by Phillippe and gave birth to a daughter in 2011.
