Ryan Kyle CooglerΒ (born May 23, 1986)Β is an American filmmaker. He has received anΒ Academy Award, aΒ BAFTA Award, fourΒ Black Reel Awards, aΒ Grammy Award, aΒ Golden Globe Award, and tenΒ NAACP Image Awards.
Coogler directed a few short films at the USC School of Cinematic Arts before his feature-length debut withΒ Fruitvale StationΒ (2013). He then transitioned to directing and writing franchise films, including theΒ RockyΒ seriesΒ spinoff,Β CreedΒ (2015), as well as theΒ MarvelΒ filmsΒ Black PantherΒ (2018) andΒ Black Panther: Wakanda ForeverΒ (2022). Coogler also produced theΒ historical dramaΒ Judas and the Black MessiahΒ (2021) and theΒ supernatural horror filmΒ SinnersΒ (2025), which he also wrote and directed.Β He received nominations for theΒ Academy Award for Best PictureΒ for both films, while forΒ Sinners,Β he was also nominated forΒ Best DirectorΒ and won the Oscar forΒ Best Original Screenplay.
In 2013, he was included onΒ Time's list of the 30 people under 30 who are changing the world.Β In 2018, Coogler was named the runner-up ofΒ Time's Person of the Year, and he was included in the annualΒ TimeΒ 100Β list of the most influential people in the world.Β In 2021, Coogler, his wife,Β Zinzi Coogler, andΒ Sev OhanianΒ founded multimedia production companyΒ Proximity Media.
