Rupert William Anthony FriendΒ (born October 1981) is an English actor. He first gained recognition for his roles inΒ The LibertineΒ (2004) andΒ Mrs Palfrey at the ClaremontΒ (2005), winning him awards for best newcomer. He portrayedΒ George WickhamΒ inΒ Pride & Prejudice (2005), Lieutenant Kurt Kotler inΒ The Boy in the Striped PyjamasΒ (2008),Β Albert, Prince ConsortΒ inΒ The Young VictoriaΒ (2009), psychologist Oliver Baumer inΒ Starred UpΒ (2013),Β CIAΒ operativeΒ Peter QuinnΒ in the political thriller seriesΒ HomelandΒ (2012β2017),Β Vasily StalinΒ inΒ The Death of StalinΒ (2017),Β Theo van GoghΒ inΒ At Eternity's GateΒ (2018), and Ernest Donovan in the seriesΒ Strange AngelΒ (2018β2019).
In the early 2020s, Friend began collaborating with directorΒ Wes Anderson, starting with aΒ cameoΒ inΒ The French DispatchΒ (2021), followed by roles inΒ Asteroid CityΒ (2023) and theΒ Netflix short filmsΒ The SwanΒ andΒ The Rat Catcher. In 2022, he starred as disgraced British politician James Whitehouse inΒ Anatomy of a ScandalΒ and featured in theΒ Disney+Β seriesΒ Obi-Wan KenobiΒ as theΒ Grand Inquisitor.
Friend is the director, screenwriter or producer of two award-winningΒ short films:Β The Continuing and Lamentable Saga of the Suicide BrothersΒ (2008) andΒ SteveΒ (2010). He wrote lyrics for theΒ Kairos 4TetΒ 2013 albumΒ Everything We Hold.
