Roland Joffé (/ΛdΚΙfeΙͺ/;Β born 17 November 1945) is an English film and televisionΒ director,Β producerΒ andΒ screenwriter. He is known for directing the critically acclaimed filmsΒ The Killing FieldsΒ (1984) andΒ The MissionΒ (1986), earning himΒ Academy AwardΒ nominations forΒ Best Director. The latter won theΒ Palme d'OrΒ at theΒ 1986 Cannes Film Festival.
JoffΓ© began his career in television, with early credits including episodes ofΒ Coronation Street and anΒ adaptationΒ ofΒ The Stars Look DownΒ forΒ Granada. He gained a reputation for hard-hitting political stories with the seriesΒ Bill BrandΒ and factual dramas forΒ Play for Today. In the late 1980s, he co-founded the production company Lightmotive withΒ Ben Myron.
