Robert Anthony RodriguezΒ (/rΙΛdriΛΙ‘Ιz/Β ro-DREE-ghez; born June 20, 1968)Β is an American filmmaker, composer, and visual effects supervisor. He shoots, edits, produces, and scores many of his films in Mexico and in his home state ofΒ Texas. Rodriguez directed the 1992 action filmΒ El Mariachi, which was a commercial success after grossing $2.6 million ($5.5 million in 2023 dollars) against a budget of $7,000 ($14,937 in 2023 dollars). The film spawned two sequels, collectively known as theΒ Mexico Trilogy:Β DesperadoΒ (1995) andΒ Once Upon a Time in MexicoΒ (2003).
Rodriguez directedΒ From Dusk till DawnΒ in 1996 and developed itsΒ television series adaptation(2014β2016).Β He co-directed the 2005 neo-noir crime thriller anthologyΒ Sin CityΒ (adapted from theΒ graphic novel of the same name) and the 2014 sequel,Β Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. He is also the creator of theΒ Spy KidsΒ franchise, as well asΒ The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D (2005),Β Planet TerrorΒ (2007),Β MacheteΒ (2010),Β We Can Be HeroesΒ (2020), and directedΒ The FacultyΒ (1998) andΒ Alita: Battle AngelΒ (2019).
Rodriguez is a close friend and frequent collaborator of filmmakerΒ Quentin Tarantino, who founded the production companyΒ A Band Apart, of which Rodriguez was a member. In December 2013, Rodriguez launched his own cable television channel,Β El Rey.
