Richard LinklaterΒ (/ΛlΙͺΕkleΙͺtΙr/; born July 30, 1960) is an American filmmaker. He is known for making films that deal thematically withΒ suburban culture and the effects of theΒ passage of time. In 2015, Linklater was included on the annualΒ TimeΒ 100 list of the most influential people in the world.
His films include the comediesΒ SlackerΒ (1990) andΒ Dazed and ConfusedΒ (1993); theΒ BeforeΒ trilogyΒ of romance films:Β Before SunriseΒ (1995),Β Before SunsetΒ (2004), andΒ Before MidnightΒ (2013); the music-themed comedyΒ School of RockΒ (2003); theΒ adult animatedΒ filmsΒ Waking LifeΒ (2001),Β A Scanner DarklyΒ (2006), andΒ Apollo 10Β½: A Space Age ChildhoodΒ (2022); the coming-of-age dramaΒ BoyhoodΒ (2014); the comedy filmΒ Everybody Wants Some!!Β (2016); and the romantic comedyΒ Hit ManΒ (2023).
Many of Linklater's films are noted for their loosely structured narratives. TheΒ BeforeΒ trilogy andΒ BoyhoodΒ both feature the same actors filmed over an extended period of years. He has received fiveΒ Academy AwardΒ nominations and won theΒ Silver Bear for Best DirectorΒ forΒ Before Sunrise. He also won aΒ Golden Globe AwardΒ for directingΒ Boyhood.
