Biography
Ramya Krishnan (born September 15, 1970) is an acclaimed Indian actress who has appeared in over 260 films across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi cinema. Born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, she is the niece of veteran Tamil actor and political commentator Cho Ramaswamy. A trained Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Western dancer, she began her acting career at the young age of 14, making her debut with the Tamil film *Vellai Manasu* (1985). Although she initially faced a string of box-office failures, she persevered through supporting roles in the late 1980s before finding her true footing in the industry.
Krishnan achieved her major breakthrough in Telugu cinema with K. Viswanath's *Sutradharulu* (1989). She soon emerged as a leading commercial star in Tollywood during the 1990s, collaborating frequently with director K. Raghavendra Rao on massive hits like *Alludugaru* (1990), *Allari Mogudu* (1992), and the devotional blockbuster *Annamayya* (1997). She also made a successful foray into Bollywood, appearing in Yash Chopra's *Parampara* (1993), Subhash Ghai's *Khalnayak* (1993), and the hit comedy *Bade Miyan Chote Miyan* (1998). In 1999, she delivered a career-defining performance as the fiercely arrogant antagonist Neelambari opposite Rajinikanth in the Tamil blockbuster *Padayappa*. Her commanding portrayal eclipsed conventional heroine tropes, earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil and firmly cementing her as a powerhouse performer.
Throughout the 2000s, Krishnan demonstrated remarkable versatility. She became highly sought after for powerful "goddess" roles in devotional blockbusters like *Ammoru* (1995) and *Rajakali Amman* (2000), while seamlessly executing brilliant comedic timing alongside Kamal Haasan in *Panchatanthiram* (2002). After transitioning to pivotal supporting and character roles, she achieved unprecedented global fame portraying the formidable Rajamata Sivagami Devi in S. S. Rajamouli's epic *Baahubali: The Beginning* (2015) and *Baahubali 2: The Conclusion* (2017). Her fierce, authoritative performance became one of the most iconic characters in Indian cinema history, winning her the Filmfare and Nandi Awards for Best Supporting Actress.
In the streaming space, she garnered immense critical acclaim for her portrayal of a politician inspired by J. Jayalalithaa in the web series *Queen* (2019). Continuing her prolific run in mainstream cinema, she delivered notable performances in the acclaimed Tamil film *Super Deluxe* (2019), the Telugu drama *Republic* (2021), and the pan-Indian film *Liger* (2022). In 2023, she notably reunited with Rajinikanth in the massive action blockbuster *Jailer*. Her recent filmography includes Trivikram's *Guntur Kaaram* (2024) and *Purushothamudu* (2024). Her robust upcoming slate extending through 2025 and 2026 includes Gopichand Malineni's Hindi action film *Jaat* (2025), the highly anticipated sequel *Jailer 2* (2026), and the Tamil sports comedy *Gatta Kusthi 2* (2026).
