Orlando Jonathan Blanchard Copeland Bloom (born 13 January 1977) is an English actor. He made his breakthrough as the characterΒ LegolasΒ inΒ The Lord of the RingsΒ film seriesΒ (2001β03). He reprised his role inΒ The HobbitΒ film seriesΒ (2013β14). Considered by some to be theΒ Errol FlynnΒ of his time,Β he gained further notice appearing in epic fantasy, historical, and adventure films, notably asΒ Will TurnerΒ in theΒ Pirates of the CaribbeanΒ film series (2003β07, 2017),Β ParisΒ inΒ TroyΒ (2004),Β Balian de IbelinΒ inΒ the Kingdom of HeavenΒ (2005), and theΒ Duke of BuckinghamΒ inΒ The Three Musketeers(2011).
Bloom appeared in Hollywood films such as the war filmΒ Black Hawk DownΒ (2001), theΒ Australian WesternΒ Ned KellyΒ (2003), the romantic comedyΒ ElizabethtownΒ (2005), andΒ New York, I Love You(2007). In 2020, he gained acclaim for theΒ Afghanistan WarΒ drama filmΒ The OutpostΒ (2020). He also starred in theΒ Amazon Prime Video seriesΒ Carnival RowΒ (2019β2023).
He debuted professionally inΒ In CelebrationΒ at theΒ Duke of York's TheatreΒ in theΒ West EndΒ in 2007. He starred in anΒ adaptation ofΒ William Shakespeare'sΒ Romeo and JulietΒ in 2013. He returned to the theatre in a West End revival ofΒ Tracy Letts'Β Killer JoeΒ in 2018. In 2009, Bloom was named aΒ UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. In 2015, he received theΒ BAFTAΒ Britannia Humanitarian Award.
