Mischa Anne Marsden BartonΒ (born 24 January 1986)Β is a British-American film, television, and stage actress. She began her career onstage, appearing inΒ Tony Kushner'sΒ Slavs!Β and took the lead inΒ James Lapine'sΒ Twelve DreamsΒ atΒ New York City'sΒ Lincoln Center. She made her screen debut with a guest appearance on the American soap operaΒ All My ChildrenΒ (1995) and voicing Betty Ann Bongo on theΒ NickelodeonΒ cartoon seriesΒ KaBlam!Β (1996β97). Her first significant film role was as the protagonist ofΒ Lawn DogsΒ (1997), a drama co-starringΒ Sam Rockwell. She appeared in major pictures such as the romantic comedyΒ Notting HillΒ (1999) andΒ M. Night Shyamalan's psychological thrillerΒ The Sixth SenseΒ (1999). She also starred in the indie crime dramaΒ PupsΒ (1999).
Barton later appeared in the independent dramaΒ Lost and DeliriousΒ (2001) and guest-starred asΒ Evan Rachel Wood's girlfriend onΒ ABC'sΒ Once and Again (2001β02). She playedΒ Marissa CooperΒ in theΒ FoxΒ television seriesΒ The O.C.(2003β2006), for which she received twoΒ Teen Choice Awards. The role brought Barton into mainstream fame, andΒ Entertainment WeeklyΒ named her the "It Girl" of 2003.
Barton has since appeared in the comedy remakeΒ St Trinian'sΒ (2007), theΒ Richard Attenboroughβdirected dramaΒ Closing the RingΒ (2007) andΒ Assassination of a High School PresidentΒ (2008). She returned to television, starring in the short-livedΒ Ashton Kutcher-producedΒ CWΒ seriesΒ The Beautiful Life (2009).
In 2012, she returned to the stage, performing in the Irish production ofΒ Steel Magnolias. She also appeared alongsideΒ Martin SheenΒ inΒ Bhopal: A Prayer for RainΒ (2014). She has garnered critical praise for her roles in independent films, with theΒ Los Angeles TimesΒ praising her "standout" performance inΒ Starcrossed (2014). Barton was cast in the first season of theΒ MTVΒ seriesΒ The Hills: New BeginningsΒ (2019β2021), a reboot ofΒ The Hills.
