Michael FassbenderΒ (German pronunciation:[ΛmΙͺΓ§aΛΚeΛlΒ 'fasbΙndΙ]; born 2 April 1977) is a German-Irish actor.Β His accoladesΒ include nominations for twoΒ Academy Awards, fourΒ British Academy Film AwardsΒ and threeΒ Golden Globe Awards. In 2020, he was listed at number nine onΒ The Irish TimesΒ list of Ireland's greatest film actors.
After studying at theΒ Drama Centre London, Fassbender made his feature film debut inΒ 300 (2006). Early roles include theΒ HBOΒ miniseriesΒ Band of BrothersΒ (2001) and theΒ Sky OneΒ fantasy dramaΒ HexΒ (2004β2005). He first came to prominence playingΒ Bobby SandsΒ in the dramaΒ HungerΒ (2008). Subsequent roles include the 2009 filmsΒ Fish TankΒ andΒ Inglourious Basterds, and the 2011 filmsΒ Jane EyreΒ andΒ A Dangerous Method. He gained mainstream success for playingΒ Erik Lehnsherr / MagnetoΒ in theΒ X-Men series, andΒ David 8Β andΒ Walter OneΒ inΒ PrometheusΒ (2012), and its sequel,Β Alien: CovenantΒ (2017).
For his portrayal of a sex addict inΒ Steve McQueen's dramaΒ ShameΒ (2011), he won theΒ Volpi Cup for Best Actor. His portrayals ofΒ Edwin EppsΒ in the historical dramaΒ 12 Years a SlaveΒ (2013) andΒ the title roleΒ in biographical dramaΒ Steve JobsΒ (2015), respectively, earned him nominations for theΒ Academy Award for Best Supporting ActorΒ andΒ Best Actor. Following further roles in the filmsΒ The CounselorΒ (2013),Β FrankΒ (2014), andΒ MacbethΒ (2015), he took an eight-year hiatus, during which he began competing inΒ auto racing.
After driving forΒ Proton CompetitionΒ in theΒ European Le Mans SeriesΒ in 2023, Fassbender made a return to acting with the action filmsΒ The KillerΒ (2023) andΒ Black BagΒ (2025). Married to Swedish actressΒ Alicia VikanderΒ since 2017, he has two children.
