Matthew David McConaugheyΒ (/mΙΛkΙnΙheΙͺ/Β mΙ-KON-Ι-hay; born November 4, 1969) is an American actor. He achieved his breakthrough with a supporting performance in the coming-of-age comedyΒ Dazed and ConfusedΒ (1993). After several supporting roles, his first success as a leading man came in the legal dramaΒ A Time to Kill (1996). His career progressed with lead roles in the science fiction filmΒ ContactΒ (1997), the historical dramaΒ AmistadΒ (1997), and the war filmΒ U-571 (2000).
In the 2000s, McConaughey became known for starring in romantic comedies, includingΒ The Wedding PlannerΒ (2001),Β How to Lose a Guy in 10 DaysΒ (2003),Β Failure to LaunchΒ (2006),Β Fool's Gold (2008), andΒ Ghosts of Girlfriends PastΒ (2009), establishing him as aΒ sex symbol. In 2011, after a two-year hiatus from film acting, McConaughey began appearing in more dramatic roles, starting with the legal dramaΒ The Lincoln Lawyer. In 2012, he gained wider praise for his roles as a stripper inΒ Magic MikeΒ and a fugitive inΒ Mud.
McConaughey's portrayal ofΒ Ron Woodroof, a cowboy diagnosed withΒ AIDS, in the biopicΒ Dallas Buyers ClubΒ (2013) earned him widespread critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including theΒ Academy Award for Best Actor. He followed it with a supporting role inΒ The Wolf of Wall StreetΒ (2013), and a starring role asΒ Rust CohleΒ in theΒ first seasonΒ ofΒ HBO's crime anthology seriesΒ True DetectiveΒ (2014), for which he was nominated for theΒ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
