Matthew Robert SmithΒ (born 28 October 1982) is an English actor. He is known for playing theΒ Eleventh DoctorΒ in theΒ BBCΒ science fiction television seriesΒ Doctor WhoΒ (2010β2013),Β Prince PhilipΒ inΒ Netflix's historical seriesΒ The CrownΒ (2016β2017)βfor which he received aΒ Primetime Emmy AwardΒ nominationβandΒ Daemon TargaryenΒ inΒ HBO's fantasy drama seriesΒ House of the Dragon(2022βpresent).
Smith initially aspired to be a professionalΒ footballer, butΒ spondylolysisΒ forced him out of the sport. After joining theΒ National Youth TheatreΒ and studying drama and creative writing at theΒ University of East Anglia, he began his acting career in 2003, performing in plays such asΒ Murder in the Cathedral,Β Fresh Kills,Β The History Boys, andΒ On the Shore of the Wide WorldΒ in London theatres. Extending his repertoire intoΒ West EndΒ theatre, he has since performed in the stage adaptation ofΒ Swimming with SharksΒ withΒ Christian Slater, followed a year later by a critically acclaimed performance inΒ That Face.
Smith's first television role was in 2006 asΒ Jim TaylorΒ in the BBC adaptations ofΒ Philip Pullman'sΒ The Ruby in the SmokeΒ andΒ The Shadow in the North. His first significant television role came as Danny in the 2007 BBC seriesΒ Party Animals. In film, he has played aΒ dual roleΒ in the science fiction filmΒ WombΒ (2010), theΒ physical formsΒ ofΒ SkynetΒ in the cyberpunk action filmΒ Terminator GenisysΒ (2015), a 1960s pimp in the psychological horror filmΒ Last Night in SohoΒ (2021) andΒ Milo MorbiusΒ in the superhero filmΒ MorbiusΒ (2022).
