Mary Eileen McDonnellΒ (born April 28, 1952) is an American film, stage, and television actress. She receivedΒ Academy AwardΒ nominations for her roles as Stands With A Fist inΒ Dances With WolvesΒ and May-Alice Culhane inΒ Passion Fish. McDonnell is well known for her performances as PresidentΒ Laura RoslinΒ inΒ Battlestar Galactica,Β First LadyΒ Marilyn Whitmore inΒ Independence Day, and Rose inΒ Donnie Darko. She was featured as CaptainΒ Sharon RaydorΒ during seasons 5β7 of theΒ TNTΒ seriesΒ The CloserΒ and starred as Commander Sharon Raydor in theΒ spin-offΒ seriesΒ Major CrimesΒ on the same network. In 2023, she played Madeleine Usher in the miniseriesΒ The Fall of the House of UsherΒ onΒ Netflix.
