She gained prominence for her comedic performance inΒ My Cousin VinnyΒ (1992), for which she won theΒ Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She received further nominations in the category forΒ In the BedroomΒ (2001) andΒ The WrestlerΒ (2008).Β
Her early appearances were in the soap operaΒ As the World TurnsΒ (1983β1985) and the first season of the sitcomΒ A Different WorldΒ (1987).
