Maria Valcheva BakalovaΒ (/bΙΛkΙΛlΙvΙ/Β bΙ-KAH-lΙ-vΙ;Β born 4 June 1996) is a Bulgarian actress. She has receivedΒ various accolades, including aΒ Critics' Choice Movie Award and nominations for anΒ Academy Award, aΒ BAFTA Award, aΒ Screen Actors Guild AwardΒ and aΒ Golden Globe Award.Β
Born and raised inΒ Burgas, Bakalova began her career inΒ Bulgarian cinemaΒ while attending theΒ National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts. She mostly portrayed dramatic roles in films such asΒ TransgressionΒ (2017),Β The FatherΒ (2019),Β Last CallΒ (2020), andΒ Women Do CryΒ (2021). SheΒ rose to prominenceΒ after starring in the 2020Β mockumentaryΒ filmΒ Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which earned her a nomination for theΒ Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.Β
Bakalova has since starred in films of various genres, includingΒ Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022) andΒ The ApprenticeΒ (2024).
