She is the recipient of numerous accolades, including aΒ Golden Globe Award, nominations for twoΒ Academy Awards, and twoΒ British Academy Film Awards.
Part of theΒ Gyllenhaal family, she is the daughter of filmmakersΒ Stephen GyllenhaalΒ andΒ Naomi Achs, and the sister of actorΒ Jake Gyllenhaal. She began her career as a teenager with small roles in several of her father's films. She appeared with her brother in the thrillerΒ Donnie DarkoΒ (2001).
