Biography

Luca Guadagnino (Italian: [ˈluːka ɑwadaɲˈɲiːno]; born 10 August 1971) is an Italian film director and producer. His films are characterized by their emotional complexity, eroticism, and lavish visuals. Guadagnino has received numerous accolades, including a Silver Lion, alongside nominations for an Academy Award and three BAFTA Awards.

Born inΒ Palermo, Guadagnino spent part of his childhood in Ethiopia. However, the family returned toΒ Italy to escape theΒ Ethiopian Civil War. Guadagnino began his career directing short films and documentaries. He made his feature-film debut withΒ The ProtagonistsΒ (1999), the first of his many collaborations with actressΒ Tilda Swinton. His follow-up, Melissa P.Β (2005), was a commercial success in Italy but was met with mixed critical reception.

Guadagnino gained further acclaim with hisΒ DesireΒ trilogy,Β which consists of the filmsΒ I Am LoveΒ (2009),Β A Bigger SplashΒ (2015), andΒ Call Me by Your NameΒ (2017). The latter brought him international recognition.Β SuspiriaΒ (2018), a remake of theΒ 1977 film, was Guadagnino's first foray into the horror genre. It was a box office failure and polarized critics. Guadagnino's following projects wereΒ We Are Who We AreΒ (2020), a coming-of-age miniseries forΒ HBO, the romantic horror filmΒ Bones and AllΒ (2022), the romantic sports filmΒ ChallengersΒ (2024), and the period romantic dramaΒ QueerΒ (2024).

Guadagnino directed several documentaries, includingΒ Bertolucci on BertolucciΒ (2013) andΒ Salvatore: The Shoemaker of DreamsΒ (2020). Aside from filmmaking, he has been involved in the fashion world, directing advertisements for brands likeΒ FendiΒ andΒ Salvatore Ferragamo. In 2012, Guadagnino founded the production companyΒ Frenesy Film Company. He also producedΒ Belluscone: A Sicilian StoryΒ (2014),Β The Truffle HuntersΒ (2020),Β Salvatore: The Shoemaker of DreamsΒ (2020),Β Holiday, andΒ EneaΒ (2023).
