Lisa Valerie KudrowΒ (KOO-droh; born July 30, 1963) is an American actress. She rose to international fame for her role asΒ Phoebe BuffayΒ in the American television sitcomΒ Friends, which aired from 1994 to 2004. The series earned herΒ Primetime Emmy,Β Screen Actors Guild,Β Satellite,Β American ComedyΒ andΒ TV GuideΒ awards. Phoebe has since been named one of the most significant television characters of all time and is considered Kudrow's breakout role, spawning her successful film career.
She initially appeared in a 1989 episode of the hit sitcomΒ Cheers, playing a character named Emily. She also starred in several episodes of the showΒ Mad About You(1993) as Ursula before auditioning and earning the role of Phoebe onΒ Friends; her character onΒ Mad About YouΒ was written into theΒ FriendsΒ storyline as Phoebe's twin. In the late 1990s, she starred in theΒ cultΒ comedy filmΒ Romy and Michele's High School ReunionΒ (1997) and followed it with an acclaimed performance in the comedy/dramaΒ The Opposite of SexΒ (1998), which won her theΒ New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting ActressΒ and a nomination for theΒ Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female. She created, produced, wrote, and starred in theΒ HBOΒ mockumentary seriesΒ The Comeback, which initially lasted for one season in 2005 but was revived for a critically acclaimed second and final season in 2014. She was nominated for theΒ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for both seasons.
In 2007, she received praise for her starring role in the filmΒ KablueyΒ and appeared inΒ P.S. I Love You. She produced and starred in theΒ ShowtimeΒ programΒ Web TherapyΒ (2011β2015), which was nominated for aΒ Primetime Emmy Award. She is a producer on theΒ TLC/NBCΒ reality programΒ Who Do You Think You Are, which has been nominated for aΒ Primetime Emmy AwardΒ five times. She played Honey the Dog on the FOX animated seriesΒ HouseBroken.
