Kenneth LonerganΒ (born October 16, 1962) is an American playwright, screenwriter and film director. He is known for his works, which explore complex emotional and interpersonal dynamics. He has receivedΒ several awards, including anΒ Academy AwardΒ and aΒ BAFTA Award, as well as nominations for threeΒ Golden Globe Awards, aΒ Pulitzer Prize, aΒ Laurence Olivier Award, and threeΒ Tony Awards.
In 1982, Lonergan wrote his first one-act play,Β The Rennings Children. He then earned acclaim for a string ofΒ off-BroadwayΒ plays, includingΒ This is Our YouthΒ (1996),Β The Waverly GalleryΒ (2000), andΒ Lobby HeroΒ (2001), which were later revived onΒ Broadway, earning him nominations for threeΒ Tony Awards for Best Revival of a PlayΒ inΒ 2015,Β 2019, andΒ 2018, respectively. For his work onΒ The Waverly Gallery, he was selected as a finalist for theΒ Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
He directed and wrote the drama filmΒ Manchester by the SeaΒ (2016), which won him theΒ Academy Award for Best Original ScreenplayΒ as well as a nomination for theΒ Academy Award for Best Director. He was previously Oscar-nominated as a writer for his first film, You Can Count on Me (2000), and as a co-writer forΒ Martin Scorsese's historical epic film, Gangs of New YorkΒ (2002). He also wrote and directed the psychological drama filmΒ MargaretΒ (2011) and adapted E.M. Forster'sΒ novelΒ Howards EndΒ into theΒ 2017 miniseries of the same name.
