Allen Kelsey GrammerΒ (born February 21, 1955)Β is an American actor, producer, and singer. He gained fame for his role as theΒ psychiatristΒ Dr.Β Frasier CraneΒ on theΒ NBCΒ sitcom CheersΒ (1984β1993) and its spin-offΒ Frasier (1993β2004, and againΒ from 2023 to 2024). With more than 20 years on air, this is one of the longest-running roles played by a single live-action actor in primetime television history. He has receivedΒ numerous accolades, including a total of sixΒ Emmy Awards, threeΒ Golden Globe Awards, aΒ Screen Actors Guild AwardΒ and aΒ Tony Award.
Grammer, having trained as an actor atΒ Juilliard and theΒ Old Globe Theatre, made his professional acting debut asΒ LennoxΒ in the 1981Β Broadway revival ofΒ Macbeth. The following year, he portrayedΒ CassioΒ acting oppositeΒ Christopher PlummerΒ andΒ James Earl JonesΒ inΒ Othello.Β In mid-1983, he acted alongsideΒ Mandy PatinkinΒ in the originalΒ off-BroadwayΒ production ofΒ Stephen Sondheim's musicalΒ Sunday in the Park with George. He has since starred in the leading roles in productions ofΒ Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,Β My Fair Lady,Β Big Fish, andΒ Finding Neverland.
In film, he is known for his role asΒ Dr. Hank McCoy / BeastΒ in theΒ superhero filmsΒ X-Men: The Last StandΒ (2006),Β X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) andΒ The MarvelsΒ (2023). His other roles includeΒ Down PeriscopeΒ (1996),Β The Pentagon WarsΒ (1998), andΒ Swing VoteΒ (2008). In early 2010, Grammer returned to Broadway in the musical revival ofΒ La Cage aux Folles, where he received a nomination for theΒ Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical.Β In mid-2016, Grammer won aΒ Tony Award for Best MusicalΒ as producer of a musical revival ofΒ The Color Purple. In early 2019, he starred asΒ Don QuixoteΒ in a production ofΒ Man of La ManchaΒ at theΒ London Coliseum. In late 2023,Β The TelegraphΒ described Grammer as one of "the finest actors" of his generation.Β He was awarded a star on theΒ Hollywood Walk of FameΒ on May 22, 2001.
