Kate Elizabeth WinsletΒ (/ΛwΙͺnzlΙt/;Β born 5 October 1975) is an English actress.Β Primarily known forΒ her rolesΒ as headstrong and complicated women inΒ independent films, particularlyΒ period dramas, she has receivedΒ numerous accolades, including anΒ Academy Award, twoΒ Primetime Emmy Awards, fiveΒ BAFTA AwardsΒ and fiveΒ Golden Globe Awards. She was appointedΒ Commander of the Order of the British EmpireΒ (CBE) in 2012.
Winslet studied drama at theΒ Redroofs Theatre School. Her first screen appearance, at age fifteen, was in the British television seriesΒ Dark Season (1991). She made her film debut playing a teenage murderess inΒ Heavenly CreaturesΒ (1994). She went on to win aΒ BAFTA AwardΒ for playingΒ Marianne DashwoodΒ inΒ Sense and Sensibility(1995). Global stardom followed with her leading role inΒ James Cameron's epic romanceΒ Titanic (1997), which was theΒ highest-grossing filmΒ at the time. Winslet then eschewed parts in blockbusters in favour of critically acclaimed period pieces, includingΒ QuillsΒ (2000) andΒ IrisΒ (2001).
The science fiction romanceΒ Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless MindΒ (2004), in which Winslet was cast againstΒ typeΒ in a contemporary setting, proved to be a turning point in her career. She gained further recognition for her performances inΒ Finding NeverlandΒ (2004),Β Little ChildrenΒ (2006),Β The HolidayΒ (2006),Β Revolutionary RoadΒ (2008), andΒ The ReaderΒ (2008). For playing a former Nazi camp guard in the last, she won theΒ BAFTA Award and theΒ Academy Award for Best Actress. Winslet has since portrayed historical figures inΒ Steve Jobs (2015) andΒ LeeΒ (2023), and has received twoΒ Primetime Emmy AwardsΒ for her performances in theΒ HBOΒ miniseriesΒ Mildred PierceΒ (2011) andΒ Mare of EasttownΒ (2021).
For her narration of a short story in the audiobookΒ Listen to the StorytellerΒ (1999), Winslet won aΒ Grammy Award. She performed the song "What If" for the soundtrack of her film,Β Christmas Carol: The MovieΒ (2001). A co-founder of the charityΒ Golden Hat Foundation, which aims to createΒ autism awareness, Winslet has also written a book on the topic. Divorced from film directorsΒ Jim ThreapletonΒ andΒ Sam Mendes, Winslet has been married to businessman Edward Abel SmithΒ since 2012. She has a child from each marriage, two of whom are the actorsΒ Mia ThreapletonΒ andΒ Joe Anders.
