Kate Elizabeth WinsletΒ (/ΛwΙͺnzlΙt/;Β born 5 October 1975) is an English actress.Β Primarily known forΒ her rolesΒ as headstrong and complicated women inΒ independent films, particularlyΒ period dramas, she has receivedΒ numerous accolades, including anΒ Academy Award, twoΒ Primetime Emmy Awards, fiveΒ BAFTA AwardsΒ and fiveΒ Golden Globe Awards. She was appointedΒ Commander of the Order of the British EmpireΒ (CBE) in 2012.
Winslet studied drama at theΒ Redroofs Theatre School. Her first screen appearance, at age fifteen, was in the British television seriesΒ Dark Season (1991). She made her film debut playing a teenage murderess inΒ Heavenly CreaturesΒ (1994). She went on to win aΒ BAFTA AwardΒ for playingΒ Marianne DashwoodΒ inΒ Sense and Sensibility(1995). Global stardom followed with her leading role inΒ James Cameron's epic romanceΒ Titanic (1997), which was theΒ highest-grossing filmΒ at the time. A co-founder of the charityΒ Golden Hat Foundation, which aims to createΒ autism awareness, Winslet has also written a book on the topic. Divorced from film directorsΒ Jim ThreapletonΒ andΒ Sam Mendes, Winslet has been married to businessman Edward Abel SmithΒ since 2012.
