Karen Sheila GillanΒ (/ΛΙ‘ΙͺlΙn/; born 28 November 1987) is a Scottish actress and filmmaker. She gained recognition for her work in British film and television, particularly for playingΒ Amy Pond, a primaryΒ companionΒ to theΒ Eleventh DoctorΒ in the science fiction seriesΒ Doctor WhoΒ (2010β2013). Her early film roles include the thrillerΒ Outcast (2010) and the romantic comedyΒ Not Another Happy EndingΒ (2013). She also worked on the stage in Britain, appearing inΒ John Osborne's playΒ Inadmissible EvidenceΒ (2011).
Gillan transitioned to Hollywood, starring in the horror filmΒ OculusΒ (2013) and playing the lead in theΒ ABCΒ sitcomΒ SelfieΒ (2014). She achieved stardom for portrayingΒ NebulaΒ in several films of theΒ Marvel Cinematic Universe(2014β2023), which are among theΒ highest-grossing films of all time, andΒ Ruby Roundhouse in the fantasy filmsΒ Jumanji: Welcome to the JungleΒ (2017) andΒ Jumanji: The Next Level (2019). She also wrote and directed the drama filmΒ The Party's Just BeginningΒ (2018), which she starred in. She has starred in the comedy filmΒ Gunpowder MilkshakeΒ (2021), the thriller filmΒ DualΒ (2022), the coming-of-age filmΒ Late BloomersΒ (2023), and returned to British television with the seriesΒ Douglas Is Cancelled (2024).
