James Eugene CarreyΒ (/ΛkΓ¦ri/; born January 17, 1962) is a Canadian and American actor and comedian. Known primarily for his energeticΒ slapstickΒ performances,Β he has received twoΒ Golden Globe Awards, in addition to nominations forΒ BAFTA AwardsΒ andΒ Screen Actors Guild Awards.
After spending the 1980s honing his comedy act and playing supporting roles in films, Carrey gained recognition when he was cast in theΒ FoxΒ sketch comedyΒ seriesΒ In Living ColorΒ (1990β1994). He broke out as a film star after starring in a string of box office hits, such asΒ Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,Β The Mask,Β Dumb and DumberΒ (all 1994),Β Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, andΒ Batman Forever(both 1995). The success of these five films led to Carrey being the first comic actor to receive an upfront $20 million salary for performing in films, beginning withΒ The Cable GuyΒ (1996).
Carrey continued to have success as a leading actor in comedies such asΒ Liar LiarΒ (1997),Β How the Grinch Stole ChristmasΒ (2000),Β Bruce Almighty (2003),Β Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate EventsΒ (2004), andΒ Yes ManΒ (2008). Since the 2010s, Carrey appeared in fewer films, with notable works includingΒ Dumb and Dumber ToΒ (2014) and his role asΒ Doctor EggmanΒ in theΒ Sonic the HedgehogΒ film seriesΒ (2020βpresent).
Although typecast mainlyΒ as a comedic actor, Carrey had success in dramatic roles. His critically acclaimed performances include the title role inΒ The Truman ShowΒ (1998) andΒ Andy KaufmanΒ inΒ Man on the MoonΒ (1999), for which he wonΒ Golden Globe Awards. He starred in the romantic drama filmΒ Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless MindΒ (2004), for which he was nominated for aΒ BAFTA AwardΒ and another Golden Globe. Carrey also starred in theΒ ShowtimeΒ tragicomedyΒ seriesΒ KiddingΒ (2018β2020), for which he received his seventh Golden Globe nomination.
