He made his film debut inΒ Barry Jenkins's drama filmΒ MoonlightΒ (2016) and gained prominence for his portrayal ofΒ Korey WiseΒ inΒ Ava DuVernay'sΒ NetflixΒ miniseriesΒ When They See Us (2019), which earned him theΒ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. Jerome has since starred as a 13-foot-tall boy inΒ Boots Riley's miniseriesΒ I'm a Virgo (2023) and as wrestlerΒ Anthony RoblesΒ in the sports biopic filmΒ UnstoppableΒ (2024).
