Jesse David ArmstrongΒ (born 13 December 1970) is an English screenwriter and producer. Known for writing for a string of several critically acclaimedΒ British comedyΒ series as well as satirical dramas, he has received numerous accolades, including twoΒ BAFTA TV Awards, threeΒ Golden Globe Awards, threeΒ WGA Awards, and eightΒ Emmy AwardsΒ in addition to nominations for anΒ Academy AwardΒ and twoΒ BAFTA Film Awards.
He first gained prominence co-creating the British comedy showsΒ Peep ShowΒ (2003β2015) andΒ Fresh MeatΒ (2011β2016) with his writing partnerΒ Sam Bain. During this time, he wrote for the political satire seriesΒ The Thick of ItΒ (2005β2009) and co-wroteΒ In the LoopΒ (2009), the latter of which earned himΒ Academy AwardΒ andΒ BAFTAΒ nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay. He also co-wrote the filmsΒ Four LionsΒ (2010) andΒ DownhillΒ (2020). Armstrong wrote and directed the television filmΒ MountainheadΒ (2025).
He gained acclaim for creating theΒ HBOΒ comedy-drama seriesΒ SuccessionΒ (2018β2023), earning four consecutive wins of theΒ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for writing episodes of theΒ first,Β second,Β thirdΒ andΒ fourthΒ seasons ofΒ Succession.
