Janet McTeerΒ OBEΒ (born 5 August 1961) is an English actress. She began her career training at theΒ Royal Academy of Dramatic ArtΒ before earning acclaim for playing diverse roles on stage and screen in both period pieces and modern dramas. She has received numerous accolades, including aΒ Tony Award, anΒ Olivier Award, aΒ Golden Globe AwardΒ and nominations for twoΒ Academy AwardsΒ and aΒ Primetime Emmy Award. In 2008, she was appointed as anΒ officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)Β for her services in drama.
McTeer made her professional stage debut in 1984 and was nominated for the 1986Β Olivier Award for Best NewcomerΒ forΒ The Grace of Mary Traverse. She received theΒ Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress and theΒ Tony Award for Best Actress in a PlayΒ for her A Doll's HouseΒ performance in 1997. For her roles onΒ Broadway, she received two other nominations forΒ Mary StuartΒ in 2009 andΒ Bernhardt/HamletΒ in 2019.
McTeer has also gained acclaim for her film roles, having received twoΒ Academy Award nominations, one forΒ Best ActressΒ inΒ TumbleweedsΒ in 1999 and the other forΒ Best Supporting ActressΒ inΒ Albert NobbsΒ in 2011. She received aΒ Primetime Emmy AwardΒ nomination for portrayingΒ Clementine ChurchillΒ in theΒ HBOΒ filmΒ Into the StormΒ (2009).
