James Brian Mark PurefoyΒ (born 3 June 1964) is an English actor. He playedΒ Mark AntonyΒ in theΒ HBOΒ seriesΒ Rome, Nick Jenkins inΒ A Dance to the Music of Time, college professor turned serial killer Joe Carroll in the seriesΒ The Following,Β Solomon KaneΒ in theΒ film of the same name, and Hap Collins in theΒ SundanceΒ seriesΒ Hap and Leonard. Purefoy also played Lord Phillipe de Clermont in the second season of the hit AMC/Netflix series "A Discovery of Witches". In 2018, he starred as Laurens Bancroft in theΒ first seasonΒ ofΒ Altered Carbon, aΒ NetflixΒ original series. Following an uncredited role asΒ VΒ in the 2006 filmΒ V for VendettaΒ (replaced andΒ dubbed overΒ byΒ Hugo Weaving), he was cast in a main role asΒ Captain Gulliver "Gully" Troy / Captain BlightyΒ in the 2020β2021Β secondΒ and 2022Β third seasonΒ of the television seriesΒ Pennyworth, theΒ prequelΒ to bothΒ Gotham andΒ V for Vendetta.
