James Francis Gunn Jr.Β (born August 5, 1966)Β is an American filmmaker. He began his career as a screenwriter in the mid-1990s, starting atΒ Troma EntertainmentΒ withΒ Tromeo and Juliet (1996). He then began working as a director, starting with the horror-comedy filmΒ SlitherΒ (2006), and moving to the superhero genre withΒ Super (2010),Β Guardians of the GalaxyΒ (2014),Β Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2Β (2017),Β The Suicide SquadΒ (2021), andΒ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3Β (2023).
In 2022,Β Warner Bros. DiscoveryΒ hired Gunn and his longtime producer, Peter Safran, to serve as co-chairmen and co-CEOs ofΒ DC Studios.Β Under DC Studios, Gunn co-produced and executive produced every film and television series in theΒ DC UniverseΒ (DCU) media franchise alongside Safran, which serves as a soft reboot of theΒ DC Extended UniverseΒ (DCEU). In the DCU, he created the seriesΒ Creature CommandosΒ (2024) and wrote and directed the filmΒ Superman (2025).
He also wrote and directed the web seriesΒ James Gunn's PG PornΒ (2008β2009), theΒ HBO Max original seriesΒ PeacemakerΒ (2022β2025) and theΒ Disney+Β original specialΒ The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday SpecialΒ (2022). Other work for which he is known include writing forΒ the 2004 remakeΒ ofΒ George A. Romero'sΒ Dawn of the Dead (1978), writing the live-action adaptation ofΒ Scooby DooΒ (2002), and its sequelΒ Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters UnleashedΒ (2004), writing and producing the horror-action filmΒ The Belko Experiment (2016), producing the superhero-horror filmΒ BrightburnΒ (2019), and contributing to comedy-anthology filmΒ Movie 43Β (2013) (directing the segment "Beezel") and the 2012 hack-and-slash video gameΒ Lollipop Chainsaw.
