Jagapathi Babu (born Veeramachaneni Jagapathi Rao Chowdary on February 12, 1962), affectionately known as "Jaggu Bhai," is a prolific Indian actor who predominantly works in Telugu cinema, alongside major roles in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi films. Born in Machilipatnam to veteran producer-director V. B. Rajendra Prasad, he debuted as a child artist in his father's *Manchi Manushulu* (1974) and made his lead debut in *Simha Swapnam* (1989).
He found his commercial breakthrough with *Peddarikam* (1992) and Ram Gopal Varma's gritty thriller *Gaayam* (1993), which won him his first Nandi Award for Best Actor. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Jagapathi Babu became synonymous with the "family hero" genre following the blockbuster *Subhalagnam* (1994). He delivered acclaimed performances across family dramas, comedies, and action films, winning Nandi Best Actor Awards for *Maavichiguru* (1996) and *Manoharam* (2000), and Best Supporting Actor for *Anthahpuram* (1998) and *Lakshyam* (2007) — the latter also earning him a Filmfare Award.
In 2014, Jagapathi Babu redefined his career with a menacing, critically lauded portrayal of the ruthless Jitendra in Boyapati Srinu's *Legend* (2014) opposite Nandamuri Balakrishna. Winning both the Filmfare and Nandi Awards for Best Villain, this transition launched one of the most successful "second innings" in Indian cinema. He rapidly became the most sought-after stylish antagonist and character actor across South India, delivering towering performances in blockbusters like *Lingaa* (2014), *Srimanthudu* (2015), *Nannaku Prematho* (2016), Malayalam hit *Pulimurugan* (2016), *Rangasthalam* (2018), *Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava* (2018), *Maharshi* (2019), *Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy* (2019), and Prashanth Neel's pan-Indian action epic *Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire* (2023).
His deep baritone and commanding screen presence have made him indispensable for big-ticket multi-lingual projects. In 2024, his prominent releases included Trivikram's *Guntur Kaaram*, *The Family Star*, the Hindi actioner *Ruslaan*, Harish Shankar's *Mr. Bachchan*, Suriya's Tamil epic *Kanguva*, and Sukumar's *Pushpa 2: The Rule*. He maintains a massive slate of pan-Indian releases through 2025 and 2026. His 2025 projects feature Gopichand Malineni's Hindi actioner *Jaat*, the Telugu fantasy adventure *Mirai*, Krish Jagarlamudi's *Ghaati*, the Kannada multi-starrer *45*, and *Akhanda 2: Thaandavam*. Expected in 2026, he essays the pivotal role of Appala Soori in Buchi Babu Sana's sports drama *Peddi* alongside Ram Charan, and features in the pan-Indian mythological film *Nagabandham - The Secret Treasure*, *Godari Gattupaina*, *Seetha Payanam*. With a career spanning over three decades, nearly 180 films, seven Nandi Awards, and four Filmfare Awards, he stands as a versatile stalwart of Indian cinema.
