JoIssa Rae Diop (born January 12, 1985), known professionally asΒ Issa Rae, is an American actress, writer, and producer. She achieved recognition as the co-creator, co-writer, and star of theΒ HBOΒ comedy seriesΒ Insecure (2016β2021), for which she was nominated for multipleΒ Golden Globes AwardsΒ andΒ Primetime Emmy Awards.
Rae first garnered attention for her work on theΒ YouTubeΒ web seriesΒ Awkward Black GirlΒ (2011β2013).Β Her 2015 memoir, Β The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, became aΒ New York TimesΒ bestseller. In 2020, Rae formed the production companyΒ Hoorae Media.
Rae has also appeared in films, with roles in the dramaΒ The Hate U GiveΒ (2018), the fantasy comedyΒ LittleΒ (2019), the romanceΒ The PhotographΒ (2020), the romantic comedyΒ The LovebirdsΒ (2020), the comedy thrillerΒ Vengeance(2022), and the comediesΒ BarbieΒ andΒ American FictionΒ (both 2023). She also had a voice role in the short filmΒ Hair LoveΒ (2019) and voicedΒ Jess Drew / Spider-WomanΒ inΒ Spider-Man: Across the Spider-VerseΒ (2023).
In 2018 and 2022, Rae was included in the annualΒ TimeΒ 100 list of the most influential people in the worldΒ and in 2014 in theΒ Forbes '30 Under 30'Β list in the entertainment section. She was recognized with theΒ Peabody Trailblazer AwardΒ and theΒ Producers Guild of America Visionary Award.
