Hunter SchaferΒ (born DecemberΒ 31, 1998) is an American actress, model andΒ transgender rights activist. Born inΒ Trenton, New Jersey, and raised inΒ Raleigh, North Carolina, Schafer was assigned male at birth andΒ transitionedΒ as a child. She came to public attention after joining a 2016 lawsuit against North Carolina'sΒ Public Facilities Privacy & Security Act, a so-called "bathroom bill" which prevented transgender people from using public bathrooms corresponding to theirΒ gender identity. For her activism, she was named toΒ Teen Vogue's "21 Under 21" list in 2017.
Schafer has studiedΒ watercolour paintingΒ andΒ clothing design. In 2017, she began work as aΒ fashion modelΒ for various brands. Schafer initially planned to attend an arts college to further her studies in clothing design, but instead decided to transition to acting after being cast in theΒ HBOΒ teen drama seriesΒ EuphoriaΒ (2019βpresent). Her role as transgender high school studentΒ Jules Vaughn, and her co-writing credit on an episode of the series, garnered her critical praise.
Schafer has since starred in the filmsΒ The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & SnakesΒ (2023) andΒ CuckooΒ (2024), and had minor roles inΒ Kinds of KindnessΒ (2024) and the EnglishΒ dubΒ of the Japanese filmΒ BelleΒ (2021). Schafer has continued to model after entering the acting industry, serving asΒ a brand ambassadorΒ forΒ Shiseido Makeup,Β Prada, andΒ Mugler.
