She began her career as a model and entered several beauty contests, becomingΒ Miss OhioΒ in 1986, finishing as the first runner-up in theΒ Miss USAΒ pageant of 1986, and placing sixth inΒ Miss World 1986. Her breakthrough film role was in the romantic comedyΒ BoomerangΒ (1992), alongsideΒ Eddie Murphy, which led to roles inΒ The FlintstonesΒ (1994) andΒ BulworthΒ (1998), as well as the television filmΒ Introducing Dorothy DandridgeΒ (1999), for which she won aΒ Primetime Emmy Award and aΒ Golden Globe Award.
