Gugulethu Sophia Mbatha-Raw,Β MBEΒ (/ΛΙ‘uΛΙ‘uΛΙmΛbΓ¦tΙrΙΛ/;Β born 21 April 1983) is a British actress. She began acting at theΒ National Youth Music TheatreΒ and theΒ Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She gained acclaim for her roles asΒ JulietΒ inΒ Romeo and JulietΒ andΒ OctaviaΒ inΒ Anthony and CleopatraΒ in 2005 at theΒ Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester. She made herΒ West End andΒ BroadwayΒ debut, portrayingΒ OpheliaΒ inΒ Hamlet in 2009. For her role as the titular character inΒ Jessica Swale's 2015 playΒ Nell Gwynn, she received anΒ Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best ActressΒ nomination.
Her early television roles include Β Doctor Who(2007), theΒ NBCΒ seriesΒ UndercoversΒ (2010), andΒ FOX'sΒ TouchΒ (2012). She had her breakthrough with the British period drama filmΒ BelleΒ (2013), for which she won theΒ BIFA for Best Actress. After roles in the filmsΒ Beyond the LightsΒ (2014) andΒ Miss SloaneΒ (2016), she co-starred in theΒ Emmy Award-winningΒ Black MirrorΒ episode "San Junipero" (2016), for which she received acclaim. Her other film roles includeΒ Beauty and the BeastΒ (2017),Β A Wrinkle in TimeΒ (2018),Β Motherless BrooklynΒ (2019),Β MisbehaviourΒ (2020), andΒ SummerlandΒ (2020). She has also acted in theΒ Apple TV+Β drama seriesΒ The Morning ShowΒ (2019) and theΒ Disney+Β seriesΒ LokiΒ (2021βpresent).
In 2017, Mbatha-Raw was appointedΒ Member of the Order of the British EmpireΒ (MBE) byΒ Queen Elizabeth IIΒ for services to drama. In February 2021, Mbatha-Raw was appointed a globalΒ Goodwill AmbassadorΒ for theΒ United Nations High Commissioner for RefugeesΒ (UNHCR).
