George Raymond Richard MartinΒ (bornΒ George Raymond Martin; September 20, 1948), also known asΒ G.R.R.M.,Β is an American author, television writer, and television producer. He is best known as the author of the series ofΒ epic fantasyΒ novelsΒ A Song of Ice and Fire, which was adapted into theΒ Primetime Emmy Award-winning television seriesΒ Game of ThronesΒ (2011β2019) and its prequel seriesΒ House of the DragonΒ (2022βpresent). He also helped create theΒ Wild Cards anthology series and contributedΒ to worldbuildingΒ for the video gameΒ Elden RingΒ (2022).
In 2005,Β Lev GrossmanΒ ofΒ TimeΒ called Martin "the AmericanΒ Tolkien,"Β and in 2011, he was included on the annualΒ TimeΒ 100Β list of the most influential people in the world. Martin has lived inΒ Santa Fe, New Mexico, for a long time, where he helped fundΒ Meow WolfΒ and owns theΒ Jean Cocteau Cinema. The city commemorates March 29 as George R.Β R. Martin Day.
