Gabriel James ByrneΒ (born 12 May 1950)Β is an Irish actor. He has received aΒ Golden Globe Award and nominations for aΒ Grammy Award, twoΒ Primetime Emmy AwardsΒ and twoΒ Tony Awards. Byrne was awarded theΒ Irish Film and Television AcademyΒ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018 and was listed at number 17 onΒ The Irish TimesΒ list of Ireland's greatest film actors in 2020.Β In 2009,Β The GuardianΒ named him one of the best actors who never received anΒ Academy AwardΒ nomination.
Byrne's acting career began at theΒ Focus Theatre in Dublin before he joined London'sΒ Royal Court TheatreΒ in 1974. His screen debut came in the Irish drama serialΒ The RiordansΒ and the spin-off showΒ Bracken. He went on to star in such films asΒ Defence of the RealmΒ (1986),Β LionheartΒ (1987),Β Miller's CrossingΒ (1990),Β Little WomenΒ (1994),Β Dead ManΒ (1995),Β The Usual SuspectsΒ (1995),Β The Man in the Iron MaskΒ (1998),Β Enemy of the State (1998),Β Vanity FairΒ (2004),Β The 33Β (2015), andΒ HereditaryΒ (2018). For hisΒ BroadwayΒ work, Byrne has received two nominations for theΒ Tony Award for Best Actor in a PlayΒ for his roles in theΒ Eugene O'NeillΒ playsΒ A Moon for the MisbegottenΒ (2000) andΒ Long Day's Journey into NightΒ (2016).
