Dame Emma ThompsonΒ (born April 15, 1959) is a British actress and screenwriter.Β Her workΒ spans over four decades of screen and stage, andΒ her accoladesΒ include twoΒ Academy Awards, threeΒ BAFTA Awards, twoΒ Golden Globe AwardsΒ and aΒ Primetime Emmy Award. In 2018, she was made a dame (DBE) byΒ Queen Elizabeth IIΒ for her contributions toΒ drama.
Born to actorsΒ Eric ThompsonΒ andΒ Phyllida Law, Thompson was educated atΒ Newnham College, Cambridge, where she became a member of theΒ FootlightsΒ troupe and appeared in the comedy sketch seriesΒ AlfrescoΒ (1983β1984). In 1985, she starred in theΒ West EndΒ revival of the musicalΒ Me and My Girl, which was a breakthrough in her career. In 1987, she became famous for her performances in twoΒ BBCΒ series,Β Tutti FruttiΒ andΒ Fortunes of War, winning theΒ BAFTA TV Award for Best ActressΒ for her work on both series. In the early 1990s, she often collaborated with then-husband, actor and directorΒ Kenneth Branagh in films such asΒ Henry VΒ (1989),Β Dead AgainΒ (1991), andΒ Much Ado About NothingΒ (1993).
Thompson won the BAFTA Award and the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in theΒ Merchant-IvoryΒ period dramaΒ Howards EndΒ (1992). In 1993, she received two Academy Award nominationsβBest Actress andΒ Best Supporting Actressβfor the respective roles of the housekeeper of a grand household inΒ The Remains of the DayΒ and a lawyer inΒ In the Name of the Father, becoming one ofΒ the few actorsΒ to achieve this feat.
