Donnie Yen Chi-tanΒ (Chinese:Β ηεδΈΉ;Β Jyutping:Β jan1Β zi2Β daan1;Β pinyin:Β ZhΔn ZΗdΔn; born 27 July 1963) is a Hong Kong actor, filmmaker, martial artist, and action director.Β His accolades include threeΒ Golden Horse AwardsΒ and fiveΒ Hong Kong Film Awards. He is best known for portrayingΒ Wing ChunΒ grandmasterΒ Ip ManΒ in theΒ Ip ManΒ film series, namelyΒ Ip ManΒ (2008),Β Ip Man 2Β (2010),Β Ip Man 3Β (2015), andΒ Ip Man 4: The FinaleΒ (2019). He also served as a co-producer of the spin-offΒ Master Z: Ip Man LegacyΒ (2018).
Born inΒ Guangdong, Yen developed an interest in martial arts at a young age and began experimenting with various styles, includingΒ tai chi and other traditionalΒ Chinese martial arts. At age 18, he auditioned for action choreographerΒ Yuen Woo-pingΒ in Hong Kong. He landed his first starring role in the 1984 Hong Kong martial arts action filmΒ Β Drunken Tai Chi. He made his breakthrough role as the antagonist General Nap-lan inΒ Once Upon a Time in China IIΒ (1992), oppositeΒ Jet Li's character. He appeared in several other Hong KongΒ kung fu films, includingΒ Iron MonkeyΒ (1993) andΒ Wing ChunΒ (1994).Β In 1997, he starred in hisΒ directorial debutΒ film, Legend of the Wolf.
Yen made his American debut inΒ Highlander: EndgameΒ (2000), followed by aΒ cameoΒ inΒ Blade II (2002). He went on to appear in the American filmsΒ Shanghai KnightsΒ (2003),Β Rogue OneΒ (2016),Β XXX: Return of Xander CageΒ (2017),Β Mulan (2020), andΒ John Wick: Chapter 4Β (2023).Β He has continued to be active in Hong Kong cinema, appearing in the well-received filmsΒ HeroΒ (2002),Β SPL: Sha Po LangΒ (2005),Β Flash PointΒ (2007),Β 14 BladesΒ (2010),Β Wu XiaΒ (2011),Β Kung Fu Jungle (2014),Β Chasing the DragonΒ (2017),Β Enter the Fat DragonΒ (2020),Β Raging FireΒ (2021), andΒ The ProsecutorΒ (2024), among others. For portraying Ip Man in theΒ Ip ManΒ film series (2008β2019), Yen is credited by many for contributing to the popularisation of Wing Chun in China.Β Alongside Kung fu, particularly Wing Chun, Yen is also known for incorporatingΒ elements of mixed martial artsΒ (MMA) into his action choreography. Aside from his acting, in 1997, he established his ownΒ production company, Bullet Films, which choreographed the action for Western blockbusters likeΒ Blade IIΒ (2002) andΒ StormbreakerΒ (2006).
