Debra MonkΒ (born February 27, 1949) is an American actress, singer, and writer, best known for her performances on the Broadway stage. Monk has received aΒ Tony AwardΒ andΒ Emmy Awards. Monk was born inΒ Middletown,Β Ohio. She was voted "best personality" by the graduating class atΒ Wheaton High SchoolΒ inΒ Silver Spring,Maryland.Β She graduated fromΒ Frostburg State UniversityΒ in 1973. In 1975, Monk received a Master of Fine Arts degree fromΒ Southern Methodist UniversityΒ inΒ Dallas,Β Texas. Monk garnered first attention in theatrical circles as one of the co-writers and co-stars of the 1982 musicalΒ Pump Boys and Dinettes.Β She has won theΒ Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a PlayΒ for performance inΒ Redwood CurtainΒ (1993). She also was nominated an Tony Award for roles inΒ PicnicΒ (1994),Β Steel PierΒ (1997), andΒ CurtainsΒ (2007).Β In 2000, she has wonΒ Obie AwardΒ forΒ The Time of the Cuckoo. Monk has appeared in over 30 films as of early 1990s. She made her film debut inΒ the movie versionΒ ofΒ Prelude to a Kiss, playing Aunt Dorothy.Β She later appeared inΒ The Bridges of Madison CountyΒ andΒ The Devil's Advocate. On television, she has won aΒ Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama SeriesΒ for recurring performance as Katie Sipowicz in the ABC series,Β NYPD Blue.Β She also guest-starred onΒ Law & Order,Β Desperate Housewives,Β The Closer, andΒ Girls. Monk had a recurring roles inΒ A Nero Wolfe MysteryΒ (2001-2002),Β Grey's AnatomyΒ (2006-2011), andΒ DamagesΒ (2007-2012).
