David Judah SimonΒ (born February 9, 1960) is an American author, journalist, screenwriter, and producer best known for his work onΒ The Wire (2002β2008).
He worked forΒ The Baltimore SunΒ City Desk for twelve years (1982β1995), wroteΒ Homicide: A Year on the Killing StreetsΒ (1991), and co-wroteΒ The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City NeighborhoodΒ (1997) withΒ Ed Burns. The former book was the basis for theΒ NBCΒ seriesΒ Homicide: Life on the StreetΒ (1993β1999), on which Simon served as a writer and producer. Simon adapted the latter book into theΒ HBOΒ mini-seriesΒ The CornerΒ (2000).
He is theΒ creator,Β executive producer,Β head writer, andΒ showrunnerΒ of the HBO television seriesΒ The WireΒ (2002β2008). He adapted the non-fiction bookΒ Generation KillΒ intoΒ a television mini-seriesΒ and served as the showrunner for the project. He was selected as one of the 2010Β MacArthur Fellows and named aΒ Utne Reader visionary in 2011. Simon also created the HBO seriesΒ TremeΒ withΒ Eric Overmyer, which aired for four seasons. FollowingΒ Treme, Simon wrote the HBO mini-seriesΒ Show Me a HeroΒ with journalistΒ William F. Zorzi, a colleague atΒ The Baltimore SunΒ and onΒ The Wire. Simon and frequent collaboratorΒ George PelecanosΒ reunited to create the original seriesΒ The Deuce. The drama about the New York porn industry in the 1970s and 1980s starred producerΒ Maggie GyllenhaalΒ and executive producerΒ James FrancoΒ and aired from 2017 to 2019. Simon's next series,Β The Plot Against America, debuted in 2020.
We Own This CityΒ was developed and written byΒ George PelecanosΒ and Simon and directed byΒ Reinaldo Marcus Green. The six-episode limited series premiered onΒ HBOΒ on April 25, 2022.
