David Alan MametΒ (/ΛmΓ¦mΙͺt/; born November 30, 1947) is an American playwright, author, and filmmaker.
He won aΒ Pulitzer PrizeΒ and receivedΒ Tony nominations for his playsΒ Glengarry Glen Ross(1984) andΒ Speed-the-PlowΒ (1988). He first gained critical acclaim for a trio of 1970s off-Broadway plays:Β The Duck Variations,Β Sexual Perversity in Chicago, andΒ American Buffalo. His plays, Race andΒ The Penitent, respectively, opened onΒ BroadwayΒ in 2009 and premiered off-Broadway in 2017.
Feature films that Mamet both wrote and directed includeΒ House of GamesΒ (1987),Β HomicideΒ (1991),Β The Spanish PrisonerΒ (1997), and his biggest commercial success,Β HeistΒ (2001). His screenwriting credits includeΒ The Postman Always Rings TwiceΒ (1981),Β The VerdictΒ (1982),Β The UntouchablesΒ (1987),Β HoffaΒ (1992),Β Wag the Dog (1997), andΒ HannibalΒ (2001). Mamet himself wrote the screenplay for theΒ 1992 adaptationΒ ofΒ Glengarry Glen Ross and wrote and directed theΒ 1994 adaptationΒ of his playΒ OleannaΒ (1992). He created and produced theΒ CBSΒ seriesΒ The Unit (2006β2009).
