Biography

Darren AronofskyΒ (born February 12, 1969) is an American filmmaker. His films are noted for their surreal, melodramatic, and often disturbing elements, frequently in the form ofΒ psychological fiction. Over his career, he has received aΒ Primetime Emmy Award. He has been nominated for several awards including anΒ Academy Award, aΒ BAFTA Award, and aΒ Golden Globe Award.

Aronofsky studied film and social anthropology atΒ Harvard UniversityΒ before studying directing at theΒ AFI Conservatory. After completing his senior thesis film,Β Supermarket Sweep, he won several film awards, becoming a National Student Academy Award finalist. In 1997, he founded the film and TV production companyΒ Protozoa Pictures. His feature film debut, the surrealist psychological thrillerΒ PiΒ (1998), earned him the Directing Award at theΒ Sundance Film FestivalΒ and anΒ Independent Spirit AwardΒ for Best First Screenplay.

Aronofsky then directed the psychological dramaΒ Requiem for a DreamΒ (2000), the romantic fantasy sci-fi dramaΒ The FountainΒ (2006), and the sports dramaΒ The WrestlerΒ (2008), the latter of which earned theΒ Golden LionΒ at theΒ Venice Film Festival. He directed the psychological dramaΒ Black Swan(2010), earning him theΒ Best Director. His later films include the biblical epicΒ NoahΒ (2014), the psychological horror filmΒ Mother!Β (2017) and the dramaΒ The WhaleΒ (2022). Aronofsky's filmΒ Postcard from EarthΒ (2023) was produced and filmed exclusively for theΒ SphereΒ in the Las Vegas Valley on itsΒ 16K resolutionΒ screen.
